Summer is for kids at BPL

Summertime is a great break from the school year, but summer vacation can also mean learning loss (known as summer slide) for some kids. This school year’s educational disruptions mean some kids are falling even further behind.

But you can help beat the summer slide at the Library. Kids who have ready access to books over the summer can actually improve their reading skills and reading for pleasure can make a big difference! The materials and programs the Library provides motivate children to become independent readers.

The Library’s goal this summer is simple: get books in the hands of as many kids as possible—especially kids in need.

You can help us raise $10,000 by June 30th to fund our Children’s Summer Reading Program and other critical needs at the Library.

Any amount you can give will allow us to:

• Partner with the Bozeman School District on the Read 100 initiative, which encourages kids to read 100 early reader books, or 2,000 pages for chapter book readers over the summer. Kids can earn prizes for reaching key reading milestones.
• Make the reading challenge fun by hosting special activities like a story walk and Capture the Flag and performers such as the Frisbee Guys.
• Provide all kids with Take & Make activity bags centered around the Tails and Tales summer reading theme.
• Offer creative workshops where kids can explore new skills like drumming and painting.

Reading skills decline without practice and on average, two months of reading skills are lost during summer break. Children who read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are more likely to graduate high school, opening more doors to success in their future. You can directly benefit the youngest members of our community right now by providing access to books and fun educational activities.

Summer is for kids at the Bozeman Public Library and summer is the time to read what you love—and love what you read. You can make reading accessible and fun for all children by donating today.
